'Photography should appeal to both the mind and the heart'
Giving details about the photojournalism profession, Nissen said that the shots taken should appeal to both the heart and the mind. Referring to the importance of empathy in the photography profession, Nissen said, “Good photography comes out as a result of the reflection of inner feelings. As a photographer, I build bridges between people and photos. In this way, I can even feel the heart rhythms by communicating with people one-on-one. First of all, the sense of curiosity is important for photography. This feeling brings creativity with it. A good photo frame also needs to have diversity and awareness.” The frame of the nurse hugging an old woman with a plastic protector, in Nissen's Brazil Ravaged by 'the Small Flu' project, won the World Press Photo Award in 2021 as a symbol of "hope". A frame from the Homophobia in Russia study was also deemed worthy of the World Press Photo Award in 2015.
